Eye movements during visual mental imagery.

چکیده
It has long been debated whether eye movements play a functional role in visual mental imagery. A recent paper by Laeng and Teodorescu presents new evidence that eye movements are stored as a spatial index that is used to arrange the component parts correctly when mental images are generated.

Iterative Fragmentation of Cognitive Maps in a Visual Imagery Task
It remains unclear whether spontaneous eye movements during visual imagery reflect the mental generation of a visual image (i.e. the arrangement of the component parts of a mental representation). To address this specificity, we recorded eye movements in an imagery task and in a phonological fluency (non-imagery) task, both consisting in naming French towns from long-term memory. Only in the co...
متن کاملWhat Do Eye Movements Reveal About Mental Imagery? Evidence From Visual And Verbal Elicitations
This paper shows evidence that the spatial locations of objects both in a verbal description and from a complex picture are indicated by the eye movements that occur during a visualization of these objects. In two experiments, eye movements were recorded while test subjects recalled objects that were either previously observed in a complex picture or presented in a verbal description. In both c...
متن کاملMental representations of movements. Brain potentials associated with imagination of eye movements.
OBJECTIVE Current research in motor imagery is focused on similarities between actual and imagined movements on a central and a peripheral level of the nervous system. The present study measured slow cortical potentials (DC-potentials) during execution and internal simulation of memorized saccadic eye movements. METHODS In 19 healthy righthanded subjects DC-potentials were recorded from 28 el...
متن کاملWhat Do Eye Gaze Metrics Tell Us about Motor Imagery?
Many of the brain structures involved in performing real movements also have increased activity during imagined movements or during motor observation, and this could be the neural substrate underlying the effects of motor imagery in motor learning or motor rehabilitation. In the absence of any objective physiological method of measurement, it is currently impossible to be sure that the patient ...
متن کاملEye movements disrupt episodic future thinking.
Remembering the past and imagining the future both rely on complex mental imagery. We considered the possibility that constructing a future scene might tap a component of mental imagery that is not as critical for remembering past scenes. Whereas visual imagery plays an important role in remembering the past, we predicted that spatial imagery plays a crucial role in imagining the future. For th...
